My research focuses on the portrayal of Eritrean women during the struggle for Independence. During the 1970’s Women contributed significantly to liberate Eritrea from Ethiopia however, Eritrea did not liberate the women.
“As for us, upon re-entering [civil] society, we find that we are liberated but not free. In the field [the military struggle] we were not liberated, but [we were] free.”

I used stencils to create street art that draws attention to gender inequality. The cardboard box has become a symbol for protest, by stripping its corrugated layers I reveal the legacy of Eritrean women. I also begin to explore the hybrid of languages to create new forms of creolisation and to connect the diaspora.
